Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm CT. Phone orders, group tickets, accessibility, and ticket donations.
These apply to every Opera Memphis ticketed production unless an individual event specifies otherwise.
Patrons unable to attend an opera for which they’ve purchased tickets may convert the purchase into a tax-deductible donation. Contact the Box Office at (901) 257-3100 at least 24 hours in advance of the performance. The seats are then made available for other patrons and are most often used to accommodate local students. Opera Memphis is unable to refund ticket purchases.
Performances begin promptly at the stated start time. Patrons who are not in the building by this time forfeit their tickets. Ushers will seat late patrons when that is possible, but in some cases it will mean waiting until intermission.
Opera Memphis is committed to making opera accessible to everyone. We offer $10 student tickets for select performances. These tickets can only be purchased when the box office opens at the venue on the performance date and require a valid student ID. Student rush tickets are not available for purchase online or by phone.
Every patron, including small children and those in wheelchairs, must have a ticket. As a courtesy to other patrons and performers, children ages 4 and under are not permitted at indoor opera productions except for events specifically intended for children and families. All patrons must be seated in their designated seat. Any person who causes a disturbance will be asked to leave the venue without a refund.
All our performance venues comply with ADA accessibility requirements. Please contact our Box Office at (901) 257-3100 to make appropriate arrangements for wheelchair seating, companion seats, and more.
The taking of photographs and the use of recording devices are strictly prohibited during performances. Please silence and stow all cell phones before the lights go down. Selfies before, after, and at intermission are very much encouraged.

The Opera Memphis headquarters is located at 216 S Cooper Street, Memphis, TN 38104.
Q.02 What time should I arrive?
We suggest arriving 30 minutes before the start of an opera performance. Our performances begin at the advertised start time. Late seating is available at the first appropriate break in the performance; sometimes, this means being seated after intermission. Please be mindful of Memphis traffic and weather conditions on your way to the theater.
Pre-show talks, our conversation series presented by Opera Memphis’ artistic team, begin 1 hour before the opera start time.
Q.03 What kind of parking is available?
Parking depends on the venue. The Germantown Performing Arts Center has a spacious on-site lot, parking is free. The Dixon Gallery and Gardens has free parking – but be prepared to walk to the Morrow Lawn. Either way, arriving early makes life easier.
Q.04 How long is the performance?
Each opera is different. Some performances average around 2.5 hours, while others run closer to an hour or an hour and a half. Check the individual production page for run time.
Dress to your comfort level. Tuxedo and evening gown? Go for it. Jeans and a casual shirt? Also fine. You’ll see every kind and level of dress at our events. We do suggest that anyone who tends to be cold should consider bringing a sweater in case the performance venue is chilly.
Yes! But only before or after the show, or during intermission. Please refrain from recording or photographing during the performance. The use of electronic devices during the performance is strictly prohibited — silence and stow all cell phones.
Q.07 Is my child old enough to come?
Our indoor venues generally prohibit anyone under four from attending shows that aren’t specifically produced for family performances. For older children, it’s up to your preference and knowledge of your child — if they can sit through a full feature-length movie, they’ll probably be okay at the opera.
Each season we try to program at least one opera specifically crafted to be family-friendly. If you’re unsure, just call the Box Office. With young children, consider aisle seats for easy access to restrooms or the lobby. Any patron who causes a disturbance will be asked to leave without a refund.
Q.08 Will I understand what they're singing?
Yes! Many of our ticketed performances, even those in English, are accompanied by surtitles Think subtitles on a movie, but scrolling across the top or off to the side of the stage instead of the bottom of the screen. You don’t need to carefully read every word — opera composers know that singing can sometimes make words difficult to catch, so they use skillful repetition to make sure you get the point.
Q.09 Is it okay to applaud? When do I shout bravo?
Of course. Typically, people applaud at the end of an aria (a song) and at the end of the performance. If you’re still not sure, applaud when others applaud if you agree.
Now the fun part: during bows and applause, you’ll hear someone shout Bravo! Here’s your cheat sheet:
Q.10 Are tickets sold at the door?
As long as the opera isn’t sold out, we sell tickets at the door. Note that several of our recent operas sold out before the performance date — we strongly advise purchasing in advance.
We accept cash and all major credit cards, but cannot accept checks for tickets bought on the same day as the performance. The Box Office opens an hour and a half in the performance venue.
